January was an outstanding month! In math students mastered two-digit subtraction and addition. They are eager to start our money and time unit. Please continue to review basic addition and subtraction facts at home. In reading, we have been working on narrative elements of a story. These focus points are the title, author’s purpose, and setting. They should be able to answer the 5 W’s “who, what, where, when, and why” about the story. They are continually working on their word study words and vocabulary from their stories. We have also been reading and learning about fiction and non- fiction stories. In social studies, we are currently working on our unit on Famous Americans. We will soon begin studying our unit on Geography. In science, we learned all about matter and we are currently learning about different forms of energy. Lastly I would like to congratulate Jacob Esquivel, the January Star Student of the Month!

Third graders have been busy mastering their multiplication and division facts! They even started multiplying 3 one-digit numbers. In Religion, we have followed Sr. Sharon’s example and started meditation before praying the Our Father. Students spend time in silent prayer with Jesus. They are also very excited about their daily Prayer Journals. They take time each day to pray for someone or something in their life or to simply thank God for the blessings they received that day.

Multicultural Day was a great success. The students enjoyed performing the Indian dance in their Indian outfits. Our IOWA testing begins next month. Please make sure students arrive on time this week! Everyone did a great job on the Science Fair. Winners were: Dhruv Patel (1st place), Dennis Lowry (2nd place), Dylan Gomez (3rd place), and Laura Reyes (Honorable Mention). Representing 4th grade at the Regional Spelling Bee will be Janvee Patel. Our new student, John Ledford, joined us two weeks ago, and is now a part of our fourth grade family.

Fifth graders have been especially creative lately! They made an awesome “quilt” for Multicultural Day, rodeo boots, and illustrations comprised of hearts. Their creativity did not end with the visual arts. Students have entered an essay contest and were allowed to choose the form in which to present their ideas – poetry, interview, essay, etc. It’s always a great challenge to think in different ways!
